Hope #1 to Debut at Free Comic Book Day

Official Press Release

May 4th, 2019 is Free Comic Book Day, and rather than merely offering reprints or previews of past or future titles, Source Point Press will be offering participating stores and readers an exclusive opportunity to get the complete first issue of a brand new six-part mini-series: Hope #1 by writer Dirk Manning  (Nightmare World) and illustrator K. Lynn Smith (Plume).

Unbeknownst to her husband and daughter, Julie Lavelle secretly moonlights as a beloved costumed “Ultra” known to the public as Hope. However, when a family outing takes an unexpected turn, she quickly learns how everything can change in an instant.

“Source Point Press has become known for our horror and science fiction titles, and not necessarily superhero comics, but we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring Hopeto our line-up and our readers,” says Source Point Press Editor-In-Chief Travis McIntire. “This is a superhero series unlike any other, bringing a sense of disturbing reality to the genre that pulls at the readers’ heartstrings and allows us to empathize with them in a way you rarely see in other titles. In this first issue, you’ll feel anger for Julie, you’ll feel panic for Julie, and you’ll even feel desperation for Julie. It’s a powerful and emotional read.”

Writer Dirk Manning has this to say about the comic: “We don’t want to give too much away until everyone gets a chance to read the first issue, but I will say that Hopeis more a book about a superhero than it is a traditional superhero book. The difference in this focus on the human condition rather than superpowers will provide a very fresh and emotional reading experience that combines the sensibilities of both my previous more horror-based works and K. Lynn Smith’s amazing sense of character-driven drama, resulting in a story about a strong female character who must face unimaginable challenges that – quite simply – can’t always be punched.”

Source Point Press has teamed up with Diamond Comic Distributors to make the first issue of Hopeavailable for free to readers via Free Comic Book Day, an event that brought nearly 1.5 million people to over 2,400 local comic shops in 2018, giving away over 5 million comic books.

“Our readers have been very loyal and generous to us,” says Art Director Joshua Werner. “This is an opportunity for us, and all the amazing comic book shops that our readers support, to say ‘thank you’ and give them something very special in return. We are planning to make issues #2 through #6 available monthly through Previewsstarting in July, giving everyone the chance to get their hands on Hope #1, fall in love with it the way we have, and then return to their local comic shop after Free Comic Book Day to begin pre-ordering the rest of the series.” He adds, “It’s an honor for us to be working with Dirk Manning again, as well as with K. Lynn Smith, who we have been big fans of for years. This is a dream team and we can’t wait for everyone to see the magic they’re creating together on Hope!”

Artist K. Lynn Smith says, “It’s thrilling to break the mold on the superhero genre. We get to explore new aspects of a well-worn world of heroes and villains, exploring the areas of their lives we don’t normally get to see. And getting to draw all that? It’s truly exciting for me.”
